TUC demo on 26 March: for an alternative to austerity

Date: Sat, 26 Mar 2011

Time: 11:00

Location: Assemble Victoria Embankment, 11am to march to a rally in Hyde Park

Prior to Saturday’s march Len McCluskey, general secretary of Unite warned: “Industrial strife will grow and grow. I don’t think we should rule anything in or anything out,” McCluskey added that while he opposed any violence, he backed groups such as UK Uncut which had occupied businesses and companies they accuse of dodging taxes.
“The anger will build, and build, and build as the cuts begin to have the impact that we are beginning to see. All forms of protest will be welcome and encouraged.”
These are welcome words. UK Uncut and others will be attempting to turn them into action on Saturday evening. Right to Work has signed up to the attempt to make Trafalgar Square our Tahrir Square.

The hard work begins on our return from London. We need to organize to turn talk of co-ordinated strike into reality. That could happen later this spring or in the early summer and we need to build maximum solidarity.

As the axe begins to fall we need to organise to occupy to stop closures of hospital wards, libraries, nurseries and so on.

Tomorrow’s protest will be magnificent but it must be the beginning of what must be the biggest fight of our lives. Above all no one group should be left to fight the Con Dems alone. If we march together we can strike together.

Enjoy Saturday but on your return start building at grass roots level to get the most effective strike action, protests and direct action. Our aim must be to break the coalition.

Right to Work reporting on the 26th

We will be reporting as much of the demonstration as we can, from the first coaches and trains setting off, from the march and rally, from the UKuncut protests and from Trafalgar Square. To make this possible we need reports and pictures sent in to reports@righttowork.org.uk . Send us a picture as your coaches assemble, of your delegation, your feeder march. Send us short reports. We will include as much as possible. We want to show the vibrancy and breadth of the demonstration, as well as the determination to take the mood home and continue the fight.

This government who can cut and squeeze just about everyone and everything Yet they back down to bankers blackmail & greed – & done nothing to promote education jobs and green growth- whilst their chancellor and their funders enjoy tax haven status -Lib/Dem collabrators have copted out and work for the biggest right wing government ever worse than Thatcher -
Now the very exsistance of the NHS is at risk-whilst inflation is rising due to VAT a wrong tax at this time-
We’re all in it together are we? well the Bankers are getting their unjustified payments for their sins – the tax dodgers are still dodging – yet they’ve cut the kids EMA,Schools zoo trips, Tuition Fees, Sure Start, School Sports, Bookstart & future jobs fund etc.
Next the Royal Mail is at risk by privitisation
School rebuilding and improvements have been scrapped
Police forces cut and jobs under threat
Councils for poor ares have recieved bigger cuts than rich areas
The cost of living is spiralling out of control especially for the for poor
The fuel increase rise and VAT rise could put people out of
    business
Fare increases have gone up by more than inflation proportion.
Unless this government starts to heavily in new and green industry whilst training and skilling our youth foundations for growth will not materialise -
Youth unemployment is record high and serious forms of action on job creation or welfare funded work ie Voluntary and charity sector needs to be undertaken- to prevent another lost generation.
There are sound alternative ways to reduce deficit-
But this government lacks the key ethos to put not just Britain but all it’s people back on the right road.
The ethos they must embrace in order to back Britain back on track
is first of all they must embrace the Ethos of a fairer distribution of wealth.and that all business and corporations embrace an ethos of producing a good quality service or product,
at a fair price, whilst paying fair but not unjustified salaries,&
attempting to give shareholders fair return.

Hello there, Just wondered if you had any details on the apparent DAY X coming up on the 26th? I want to photograph it for a College assignment and I don’t want to make the 250 mile trip if nothing is going to be happening. What can I expect from this day? and have you got any specific details that would be a help to me?
    Regards,

WE must stop Con/Dem NHS reform which will lead to a USA style health service and to increased privitisation of health services resulting in a gradual break down of the NHS – I fear this is the begining of the end for NHS

This is all very naive. We need cuts to the size of the sate. The huge increase in public sector jobs by the last govt stifles grown and not sustainable.

A robin hood tax is daft, it will tax the govt in taxing the state banks & why tax the banks that didn’t take public money? Did you demand a robin hood tax on the miners in 70s & 80′s when the govt bailed them out? how about taxing steel workers, ship builders? Or is it based on petty class inverted snobbery?

Why not save the lowest earners money by demanding th ecommercialisation of the BBC & remove the licence fee, maybe full privatisation?

Why not save low earners by supporing a local income tax for all and remove the unfair council tax?

These are far more progressive actions than campaign for a cut in VAT which will save the lowest earners very little.

Duke, we’ve all seen what privatisation means. Look at every industry thats been privatised, a worsening service, job cuts and worsening of the terms and conditions for the workers left with a job.
It wasnt normal working people that caused the recession it was Camerons and Osbornes rich friends in the banking sector. So why should normal working people pay for their greed. Let them pay by giving up their million pound bonuses, not normal people who are thrown out of their jobs and face pay freezes or cuts just so the rich can keep their noses in the trough.
As for the miners and the steel workers, they didnt cause a recession did they and they werent getting more in bonuses than most people earn in their lifetime.

As a 6th Form student studying politics, the regressive nature of Conservative policy and the number of policies without an electoral mandate make it my duty to attend. The bottom line is that everything the Coalition has done is unfair. Not to mention the lies of the Lib-Dems, because that’s what their broken promises and policy U-turns amount to – lies.

I’m going to join this demo.

I’ve just been sanctioned by the Job-Centre. I live in W. Wales & have been suspended because I didn’t apply for a job that I’m in no way qualified/experienced for. They are pushing people into depression and thus onto sickness benefits.. Maybe they want the not-working part of the populace off the unemployed register?

It’s soo worrying that I’m suffering from insomnia now. There is hardly any work in Ceredigion, especially if you’re reliant on public transport. I’ve heard of people applying for work in an Aberystwyth coffee house and they live in Swansea! I expect the DWP paid for the interviewees day journey to Aberystwyth. Most people going would’ve known that it’s a waste of time; as Aberystwyth is a Uni town full of eager young workers. They’re only going so that the Job-Centre workers can’t suspend their benefits. Suspension of a client might also be in a Job-Centre workers interest as it’ll make them look like they’re doing their job & hopefully avoid inclusion any culls the Job Centres work force might have to face.

Also the lackeys in the job centre are scaring the employers advertisements away. I had a lady from the DWP say exactly that in relation to people having to apply for jobs beyond their means or skill sets. This causes a great deal of work for an employer as they then have to deal with all the chaff sent their way. It also makes it harder for the unemployed to find a job being advertised.

Now in the UK the poor starve and the rich don’t have to dip into their savings..

I ask you Cameron & Queen Elizabeth II is this what you view as fair & honourable?

The internet is a modern archive of history recording. Someone (with time) should set-up a website to record and expose the lies, deceit, cuts, MP’s expenses, bank bonuses and those who are responsible for mismanagement of this country. Make it a legacy they leave is one that tells the truth of the greed and lying of the fat-cats. Let them be an embarrassment to their children, grand-children and great grand-children; let them and everyone see whose nose was in the trough and what they did to the poor, and let them see it for the next hundred years. After all popularity and a mark in history is what they want on top of everything else. Don’t let them have it. (Not how they want it anyway).

Clearly you have the goverment scared and they have seen it necessary to convince TUC to make sure the protest goes their way. TUC have been trained by police, and are going to maintain constant radio contact with the police who take their orders from the goverment. There was inevitably going to be a protest this is common sense, but to ensure the protest is ineffective as possible they have it on their (governments) terms. The goverment have to realise this is a democracy and the people do not want these cuts to the public sector and benefits to happen and if they continue… I’ll give an example swapping money for food.
Their are rich people in a house with poor people standing outside. The rich people everyday they have a feast, more than enough to go around, enough so much so they just throw it away. Outside the poor people knock everyday asking for food everyday getting the reply there’s no food. However the Poor people can see the food and that they are wasting it throwing it around. The poor people start to try and sing their way in “please let us in, we are hungry”. A week passes they start to sing “we need food, let us in”. Two weeks go by It turns to “let us in or we’ll break down the door”. Finally they pick they lock and take everything. I am not condoning violence or inciting hatred. This is common sense in the mind of a politician, whether you believe this or not is your choice.

What are we to believe : Money for bombs and misiles that cost around £250,000 for each one that is dropped or fired along with running three active conflicts in that region, loan Ireland £8 Billion pounds towards their financial meltdown whilst we are suppose to be suffering a simalar fate, Let the Tax Evaders continue to avoid paying their fair share of taxes (George Osborne included)along with all the other known Tories that avoid taxes but at the same stroke this Coalition is slaughtering it’s own country with cutbacks.

There really is another alternative because this Coalition is conning and taking us all for a ride. Their deficit deduction is all about taking from the poor to give to the rich whilst maintaining three enormously expensive conflicts and feathering nests for others whilst the most vulnerable and less fortunate along with hard working people suffer the consequences of this Tory/Lib Coalition’s deceit and lies.

I see the cuts affecting older people and their carers every day as services are cut. Eligibility criteria are ignored. Those in the substantial category get nothing unless they complain, only critical cases get help. Social worker workloads are increasing as is the massive burden of paperwork. Staff sick or leaving are not replaced and the risks to both the older people and the staff’s jobs increase daily. Time to march and show this absurd coalition that it is rowing in the wrong direction and that it is time to get out of the boat or turn around.
