A huge
police operation for the Lib-Dem spring conference in Sheffield on March 12 is threatening to block anti-cuts campaigners’ democratic right to meet in the city centre on the day.
Student union officers at Sheffield Hallam University have cancelled a booking for a planned public meeting organised by Right to Work for the afternoon after being warned by police to close their doors because of a planned march and rally being held in the morning.
According to Sheffield Hallam NUS President Caroline Dowd police advised them not to open because the union building might become a target for “violent” protesters.
Hallam student Tom Wilson said: “ This is just scaremonging and trying to stop people’s democratic right to protest and organise against the cuts.
Not only are the Lib-Dems part of the Tory-led Coalition putting up tuition fees, scrapping EMA and cutting education funding but they are now trying to take the city away from the people of Sheffield.
“ The police operation is costing at least £2 million and the people of South Yorkshire will have to pay to protect the very people making the cuts and destroying their lives.”
