Four schools in the borough are threatened by Michael Gove, the secretary of state for education, that if they do not agree to become academies, he will force them.
Campaigners were in no doubt that this is enforced privatisation.
Chants of “we need to get Gove” rang out from kids and parents alike.
“No forced academies!” was shouted out in the many community languages that are spoken in the schools. “The mouse that roared” and “Don’t take away my school” where amongst the slogans on the many homemade placard. Trades unionists were prominent on the march with many NUT banners from across London showing their support. NUT Deputy General secretary Kevin Courtney spoke at the rally following the march, there were also speeches from Julie Davis, local NUT secretary and Sean Fox of UNISON as well as by parents and teachers from the schools affected.
