TUC call national demo on 20th October

The TUC has called a national demonstration on Saturday 20th October titled ‘a future that works’. This is excellent news.

TUC announcement here

The demonstration on March 26th last year over half a million strong and saw massive delegations from union branches and workplaces across the country. March 26th marked the beginning of a significant increase in union action, most notably the pensions strikes on June 30th and November 30th.

Coming just 2 weeks after the TUC march on the Tory conference in Birmingham it raises the prospect of 2 massive demonstrations.

The ConDems are driving through vicious policies. They are hated and despised. Massive demonstrations in October can help finish them off.

I don’t think the TUC calling a National Demonstration in October can be regarded as ‘excellent news’. At best it is a feeble response to the attacks on our class. The chances are that it will be smaller, maybe significantly smaller than March 26th. What will matter is whether the public sector unions will be able to mobilise for strike action on a significant scale in the Autumn. That depends of the combativity of the rank and file and the European and world context in which that struggle will occur. The decision by the National Executive of the NUT recently to overturn its Annual Conference decision for strike action this term potentially undermines that combativity.

When are we going to learn that large marches passed Downing street etc.
Are great for union morale but will have no effect on government policies
It is time to take National action and if the Labour party will not back us
Ask for our millions back to finance the campaign
