Firefighters march in Chelmsford to back Essex FBU strikes

Up to 1000 firefighters marched through Chelmsford yesterday to back striking Essex FBU members.

The FBU members were taking their third period of strike action against cuts to front line services.

Plans to replace full time officers with retained firefighters have been fought by the FBU who say the number of frontline staff has fallen by 20 percent since 2008.

The attacks in Essex are just the tip of the iceberg with the Tories set to cut 25 percent of central funding to the fire service by 2015.

Further strike dates had. already been announced for 18 August and 18 October.

But now further action has been called, this includes:

    • 26th July 2012 14.00 – 17.00 and 19.00 – 22.00 – strike action.
    • 27th July 2012 18.00 – 28th July 2012 09.00 – carrying out no duties
      other than responding to 999 calls only
    • 11th August 2012 14.30 – 17.30 and 21.00 – 24.00 – strike action
    • 12th August 2012 09.00 – 13th August 2012 06.00 – carrying out no
      duties other than responding to 999 calls only
    • 5th September 2012 09.00 – 13.00 – strike action
    • 18th October 2012 11.00 – 16:00 – strike action’
